slightly confused...
I was wondering if someone understood this better than me,
but to use the hosted mintchip, we have to provide a certificate.
Does that mean that even for the average user we have to assume they can/know how to install a certificate?
Maybe I'm missing something....

Maybe. It depends on how certificates are distributed. You may be able to download it and install it from within your app.

At least the APIs Im aware of do only need certificates for Shop and E-Commerce purposes. There it is required to have a highly secure "Soft-MintChip" protected by PKI or other strong crypto means to allow e.g. virtual servers using the system. Simply because one does not have a chance to insert USB or Smart-Card-Tokens in to this machines.
