I am not a software developer, but I am interested in evaluating this new technology from the perspective of privacy and security.

Is there any way - aside from entering the competition - for a person to get a MintChip at this stage?

  I believe a mint chip is just a micro sdcard with a NFC tag inside. Its probably just as hackable/secure as a credit card or a RFID card, which is easily hackable and not very secure.

  I haven't seen any indication that MintChip uses NFC. Nothing in the documents even implies wireless technology of any sort.
